Joey Jaey grew up in a musical family - every member was in the choir. In high school, he was the singing prefect and discovered his love for writing, which eventually led him to composing music for friends and family members who were professional musicians.
After graduating from university and working as a full-time lawyer, Joey Jaey took a hiatus from music until the pandemic hit in 2020. Realizing the fragility of life, and not wanting to live in regret, he picked up his pen again as a music artist and soon released his debut single "Friends" ft. Ajuju and Meyar. With more time to figure out his sound, Joey Jaey explored multiple genres before embracing afrobeats primarily, infusing it with his unique soul and flavor.
Once upon a time, in the vibrant world of music, a mesmerizing debut album was released on July 1, 2023. This extraordinary musical creation comprises 10 captivating songs influenced by the Afrobeat, RnB, Amapiano, and Pop genres.
Within this remarkable album, each track weaves a unique story, inviting listeners into a world of emotions and melodies. Let's embark on a journey through the enchanting narratives that unfold within the songs.
The opening track, "Feelings," sets the stage by showcasing a passionate connection to music and introducing a distinctive sound. It serves as an enticing introduction to the album's captivating allure.
"Go There," the second track, delves into a poignant heartbreak tale. It expresses the raw emotions of disappointment as the singer shares their feelings about their former partner's departure for someone wealthier. The melodies poignantly convey the depths of their sorrow.
Moving forward to the third track, "Waiting," a powerful yearning takes center stage. The singer beautifully expresses their willingness to wait patiently, even if their beloved is involved with someone else. The lyrics evoke a sense of hope and determination.
The fourth track, "Kolombo," embraces seduction and desire, creating an atmosphere charged with passionate intentions. The lyrics and melodies intertwine, painting a vivid picture of the singer's intense longing for their partner.
"Sisi Eko," the fifth track, transports listeners to the vibrant streets of Lagos, Nigeria. It showcases the singer's fascination with a captivating lady from the city, evoking a sense of curiosity and admiration. The rhythms and melodies carry the essence of African culture.
In a surprising twist, the sixth track, "Ije Love," reveals a deeply personal story. It narrates the singer's heartbreaking discovery through a DNA test, revealing that a child they believed to be theirs is not biologically related. Emotions run high as they navigate the devastating truth.
With "Orekelewa," sung in Swahili, Yoruba, and English, the album celebrates love for a Zambian girl born in Kenya. The lyrics overflow with joy and express a desire for a lasting connection. This track beautifully showcases the fusion of cultures through its multilingual composition.
The upbeat Amapiano vibes of "Mi Amor" present a paradoxical atmosphere, blending heartbreak and energetic rhythms. The singer confronts their partner, questioning the games and lies that have tainted their relationship. The song serves as a cathartic release, infused with resilience and determination.
The album's tenth track, "Importanter," delivers a powerful social message, directing attention to corrupt politicians in Nigeria. It reminds the audience that politicians should never consider themselves more important than the citizens they are meant to serve. The lyrics inspire unity and a call for change.
And so, this remarkable debut album takes listeners on a rollercoaster of emotions, weaving together stories of love, heartbreak, passion, and social awareness. The eclectic blend of genres and captivating narratives create an immersive experience for all who embark on this musical journey.
